Apparently weathered out of the sod tables or other formations that once stood here. Most seem to be water-rounded, as if once tumbled in a river. I noticed a lot of black igneous-looking stones, and quartz, which would have been created elsewhere —- Black Hills? This area was not covered by glaciers, and the main channels of the river were below, so I’m not clear on the source of these stone fields.
Sediments that created that Badlands came from the uplift of the Rockies and shedding from the Laramide orogeny. There are some gravel beds, but I’m not sure whether paleodeltas were carrying stones of this size. Anyone know? Email me!
