I was very excited to see this. Having watched the poor porcupine hiking (trundling) through the ditches in transit to the next tree, I know that it has a very short gait. The mud also records the marks of the long claws (see close-up)! Due to the great lack of trees in some parts of the park, I have been wondering about the porcupines, and how far they travel from tree to tree. This discovery (there were no trees around at all!) leads me to think that they have to make some long hikes. I saw the tracks again later, in several places, so I know the porcupine followed the Castle Trail for perhaps a mile.
