It is impossible for me to think of homesteads (grass-roofed soddies, shacks) dotting the lower grasslands below, as far as the eye can see…. homesteaders who came for the land, tried to make a go of it, and were starved out. The broken blue/white horizon line is the Pine Ridge Escarpment, on the opposite side of the White River.
